To learn and teach with passion!
This is something that all of us at IIUM are enthused about. Indeed, teaching and learning is a community adventure that transforms students and lecturers into scholars—people genuinely engaged in understanding and transforming the world, for there can be no greater purpose for a university.
The forthright discussion of ideas, the constructive work in teams, the courage to challenge the emptiness of irrelevance, the excitement of touching the unknown, the capacity to identify, question and develop a new concept, and the ability to look at the world as an always changing phenomenon, are actions that we consciously place at the center of our professional lives.
The University, although only a decade old, is firmly established in Macau, a city that for centuries has bridged the cultures and histories of East and West. It was here that the first Western university in Eastern Asia was founded in 1594—the University College of St Paul. It was here in Macau, bordering the South China Sea, that merchants from all corners of the known world came to talk and trade; that a maelstrom of soldiers, diplomats, traders, missionaries, pirates and adventurers felt China as a beguiling new horizon.
Macau is again known as one of the most exciting cities in China. Its historical role as a platform for positive and creative encounters has emerged with a vigor renewed by contemporary and forward-looking policies.
Scarcely 30 Km˛, Macau is home to half a million people. Its sometimes unbridled development offers multiple social, economic and moral challenges to business, politics, religion and the academy. For this reason IIUM decided to be a university of the city, for the nation, echoing and reflecting the vibrant hues of a region in rapid transformation, facing the future with optimism and a clarity of vision not divorced from its rich past.
IIUM is an exciting place. Why not accept this challenge in your preferred field and join us?
